I have decided that the first language I will learn is German. I started to seriously study the language through the Pimsleur language aquisition method.
If you do not know anything about Pimsleur it is an audio-based aquision method which uses repition to enforce comprehension. A native speaker will say a word or phrase and the student will repeat the same phrase. When new phrases are introduced the previous phrase is somehow incorporated into the new phrase. The methodology is similar to the process that children undergo when learning their native language from their parents, which is probably why it works.
The only problem I foresee with learning using this method is my natural inclination to learn through visual methods. So at the conclusion of the first lesson I decided to research the phrases I learned to say and figure out how to write them. I think I should get a book on grammar (yes I know I should probably get one for English as well) so that I will be able to write correctly. Here is the German I learned today and the english translation.
Person 1: Entshuldigen Sie, verstehen Sie Englisch?
Person 2: Nein. Ich verstehe kein Englisch. Verstehen Sie Deutsch?
Person 1: Ya ich verstehe ein bissen Deutsch.
Person 2: Sind sie Amerikaner?
Person 1: Ya ich sind Amerikaner.
Person 1: Excuse me, do you understand english?
Person 2: No. I understand no english. Do you understand German?
Person 1: Yes I understand a little German.
Person 2: Are you an American?
Person 1: Yes I am an American.
